Voting and the Law

Are these verses telling us we should not vote?

Rom 13:1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
Rom 13:2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.

The word power here means ex-oo-see'-ah From G1832 (in the sense of ability); privilege, that is, (subjectively) force, capacity, competency, freedom, or (objectively) mastery (concretely magistrate, superhuman, potentate, token of control), delegated influence: - authority, jurisdiction, liberty, power, right, strength.

From first glance you may think that the higher powers means people. However in the Greek the word used for power does not necessarily mean that. In fact it can be better translated rights or authority. I don't believe these are people and no I don't believe God ordaines heads of government. What I believe God ordaines is our rights our liberties the law of the land.
Rom 13:3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
Rom 13:4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.

In our system of government this likley means being subject to the law and the police. The rulers are those who enforce the higher power or the law.
Rom 13:5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

Obey the law so you are not judged, but also for conscience sake.
Rom 13:6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.
Rom 13:7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

Do what is required as a citizen giving to whom you must according to the law.

So can we vote?

I believe from these verse God has ordained us the power to vote. The liberties of our land allow us to vote, so I believe it is our God given right to vote or not to vote whatever you wish. There may be other places in scripture that tell us not to vote but from these passages I don't believe we should or should not vote. In a democracy there is no single person who rules over everyone, for our leaders are meant to be servants who themselves are subject to the higher powers or the law.

When Paul says Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers, I don’t believe he means to be subject to President Bush or Harper or your local rep. According to the context and Greek definitions I believe it simply means the highest laws of your area.

If you still don’t think the word powers mean what I said it does.

Here is every place in scripture where this Greek word appears. KJV often translates it power but if you read the verses, right or liberty could be used just as well, and sometimes the KJV chooses to translate this word that way.
